Girl Scout Bronze Award

Highest Award for Girl Scouts ages 8 to 11

  • The Girl Scout Bronze Award was introduced when the Junior Girl Scout program resources were redesigned in 2001. The impetus for this award came from girls and volunteers who had requested a higher level award for girls at this age level.
  • The Girl Scout Bronze award is the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn. By completing the requirements for the award and by planning and carrying out a Bronze Award project, girls demonstrate that they have incorporated the values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law and the lessons of the four Girl Scout program goals into their daily lives.
  • The requirements for the award are on pages 202-203 of the Junior Girl Scout Handbook.
  • The requirements are age-appropriate for girls ages 8 to 11.  First a girl chooses a project. The project can be done alone or with others. Then she does the first three requirements in any order, but they must be completed before the project is started. An activity can not be applied to more than one requirement. These requirements relate to the project the girl has chosen and help build the leadership skills needed to carry out the project.
  • The project should take approximately 15 hours to complete-including planning time. The project itself should take approximately 7-8 hours. These are only guidelines, not rules. If a group project is done, each girl must be able to show exactly what she did and what she accomplished. The project must be a new project and should provide community service and can be done in or outside Girl Scouting. Girls follow the action plan provided in the Adventures in Girl Scouting chapter of the handbook and follow all applicable safety rules.
  • If a girl is registered in a troop or group, or leader decides when she has completed her requirements, guides her with her project planning and execution, and decides when she has earned the award. Girls do not go before committees, such as the one set up for Gold Award recipients, to have their projects approved or their awards granted.
  • Because the girl must first select a project and then do the requirements, girls may not apply activities, badges, or awards already earned towards earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award.
